6 days left until the window shuts. Manchester United are in the market for one more defender if you believe the papers. But who should they sign? With the £30million addition of Eric Bailly already in the bag, Jose Mourinho needs to find the right defender to compliment what he already has. Here are my three suggestions.
1 – Jose Fonte
The obvious candidate, and the one that the press continue to link. The 32-year-old Euro 2016 winner is thought to be open to an idea of moving to a ‘bigger club’ after a very successful summer but Southampton will be reluctant to sell their captain after another squad exodus this summer, seeing Saido Mane, Victor Wanyama and Graziano Pelle all leaving the club this summer. Southampton are no strangers to losing their best players and it could the case once again this summer.
Defenders are now heavily relied on to become natural ball players, as well as having immaculate passing accuracy, defenders are relied on to start a counter attack with forward passing at times, or simply relieving pressure on the back four. Fonte is capable of this, and he made on average 34.58 forward passes per 90 last season. He’s also very strong in the air, something Mourinho looks for in defenders; Fonte won 68% of his aerial duels last season.
Despite the plethora of reports, Claude Puel appears confident that his captain will opt to remain with the Saints following lengthy talks with the club. So Manchester United may need to look elsewhere…
