2 – Joao Miranda
An alternative option. The Brazilian has been linked with a move away from Italy this summer and with his experience he would be a good candidate to come in and add stability to the Manchester United defence. Eric Bailly is a quality defender but especially in the latter stages of the season, the club will need some experience and know how at the back. In Miranda, United could sign a defender who played more than 100 senior games for Atletico and 27 caps for his country. Following four successful years in Spain he has experimented with Serie A at Inter Milan.
Miranda is also very good in the air, he won 65.91% of his aerial duels last season, whilst impressively also managing to make 1.31 tackles and 2.17 interceptions per 90. He is a bit more of a no nonsense defender in comparison to Fonte, and that tends to suit Mourinho’s style of play – he made 5.22 clearances per 90 last campaign.
Miranda is also likely to be good value. Although Manchester United don’t normally need to worry about money, their heavy investment this summer in Paul Pogba et. al means they may need to actually tighten the purse strings with any future purchases. With young defenders like Chris Smalling and Bailly at the club, they don’t need to invest in another young defender anyway. He’s 31, so not completely past it by any means and he could firm up the United defence due to his experience and style of play. Although speculation on this one hasn’t been widespread, he has been linked with a move to United previously this summer.
