The Gunners are without Per Mertesacker who has been ruled out for up to four months with a knee injury and are now sweating on the results of Gabriel’s ankle injury.

If the results come back negative, Gabriel will join fellow teammate Per Mertesacker on the long-term injury list after he sustained an injury against Manchester City on Sunday in the Gunners 3-2 victory.

The Arsenal defender was reduced to tears after his tackle with Kelechi Iheanacho left the player in heaps of pain; he left the Ullevi Stadium with his left foot in a protective boot, with suspected ankle ligament damage.

The North Londoners will assess Gabriel further today as they try to discover the full extent of the injury.

Arsenal will try to push through a quick deal before the opening Premier League game with Valencia’s Shkodran Mustafi topping the wanted list,  Jonny Evans of West Brom is also a surprise target.

The Gunners first choice is thought to be German international Mustafi, the 24-year-old has a £42million buyout clause inserted in his contract, but the Spanish club is understood to be willing to let him leave for near enough half of his buyout clause, with £25 million thought to be the demanded price.

West Brom value 28-year-old Evans at around £15 million and would be a cheaper alternative if they fail to land their first choice target.

Arsenal are in desperate need for a new defender and will need to push through a deal quickly. They will have to register a defender by midday Friday for them to eligible to play against Liverpool.

Wenger may be forced to rush back Laurent Koscielny if the Gunners fail to land a new defender.

Other reports suggest Arsenal are lining up a £20million bid for the Valencia star in the next 48 hours. A deal could be done for £20million + bonuses. This is certainly one to keep an eye on. Follow us @FreshFootball to keep up to date.
