Liverpool look like they will be shopping in Southampton again… Liverpool fans will have lots of memories regarding Southampton signings, and most of them have not ended well.
But this one could be different. This time reports suggest that Liverpool will move for Southampton attacker Sadio Mane. The switch of focus to go for Mane comes after Mario Gotze turned the club down and opted to stay at Bayern Munich.
Mane is a pacey player who can play in the number 10 role, on either wing, or even as a striker. He has thrived at Southampton and although he can blow hot and cold and certainly lacks some consistency, he is a quality player that is sure to improve the clubs current options.
There are rumours that Liverpool are offering Jordan Ibe in a deal, most likely as a loan. Southampton, who will be competing with Liverpool for Champions League qualification next season, will not want to be the breeding ground for Liverpool youngsters, and offering Ibe on loan as part of the deal is somewhat belittling to the south coast club.
Mane was Southampton’s top goalscorer this season (15 goals in all comps) and they will be desperate to keep hold of him. Manchester United and Tottenham are also thought to be interested, whilst Tottenham look likely to sign Victor Wanyama this summer.
Klopp clearly wants to sign an attacking midfielder / forward with an excellent turn of pace after trying but failing to sign both Alex Texeira and Mario Gotze in the last 5 months. Mane may be a more attainable option, although Southampton will want in excess of £25million for the 24-year-old, whose potential is enormous.
Despite Mane’s quality, many Liverpool fans have reacted negatively to the club once again going shopping in Southampton. After all, if you continue to buy players from clubs of similar quality, are you really going to improve? Mane has quality, there’s no doubt about that, but for him to be different to the other Southampton signings, Klopp will need to drive a consistency out of Mane that we have yet to see in the Premier League.

Mane would probably play alongside Phillipe Coutinho and Roberto Firmino, behind Daniel Sturridge to form a front four that will be feared by all Premier League clubs. Sturridge, when fit is one of the best strikers in the league, Firmino just keeps getting better and Coutinho and Mane can provide sparks that can unlock nearly all types of defences. Mane’s signing would certainly give Liverpool some variety in attack and provide them with a pacier option than Adam Lallana, whose place he would probably take in the side, depending on the opposition.
Liverpool fans, we want to know if you want Mane. Comment below or tweet us @FreshFootball to get involved in the conversation.
