Recent reports suggest that Manchester City look certain to sign Borussia Dortmund’s Ilkay Gundogan, with a deal close to being completed. The talented German midfielder is also believed to be a target for Manchester United and Arsenal, but the lure of playing for Pep Guardiola appears to have convinced Gundogan to sign for Manchester City this summer.
Pep Guardiola will be given a transfer war chest this summer, in order to make the Manchester City team his own. A number of arrivals and departures are expected, with the midfield believed to be the main area City look to reinforce. With Yaya Toure’s agent confirming that the Ivorian will be looking for a move away from Manchester this summer, City are in the market for a commanding central midfielder. Paul Pogba is believed to be the club’s main target, however, a deal for the Frenchman looks unlikely, with Tuttosport reporting that he has decided to remain in Turin.
Ilkay Gundogan is available this summer and Manchester City have already entered talks with Borussia Dortmund to sign the talented midfielder, according to the reliable Sky Sports. Recent reports claim that Manchester City are close to agreeing a £23 million deal for Ilkay Gundogan, with the Daily Mail claiming that a deal will be completed for the end of the season.
Ilkay Gundogan has long been touted with a move to the Premier League, with Sky Sports reporting last summer that the talented German had agreed a deal to sign for Manchester United, however, this never materialised. Gundogan is a brilliant midfielder, who consistently puts in great performances for his club. Ilkay Gundogan was out injured for over a season with a serious back injury but the tenacious midfielder came back fully fit and forced himself back into Dortmund’s first team, showing no signs of his injury slowing him down. Gundogan is an experienced, composed midfielder who would add a different dimension to City’s midfield. The German is a great passer of the ball who can shield the back four, whilst also holding the ability to play a killer ball forward to cut through the opposition’s defence.
How does Ilkay Gundogan compare with Manchester City’s current midfield options?
Ilkay Gundogan has a higher pass accuracy (89%) Than both Fernandinho (88%) and Fabian Delph (86%). The German midfielder has also created more chances (26) than Fabian Delph (2), Fernando (8) and Fernandinho (25). He also wins more of his duels (53%) than all of Manchester City’s midfielders. The stats show that Ilkay Gundogan is a defensive minded midfielder, with the passing range and creativity to create chances for the players in front of him, without often getting on the scoresheet himself. Gundogan is exactly the type of midfielder Manchester City need. One who can sit back and defend, but who is also able to play the ball out under pressure in order to counter effectively.
Ilkay Gundogan recently added fuel to the transfer rumours when he was spotted leaving the pitch whilst his team mates celebrated their German Cup Semi-Final win this week.

This is a rumour that just won’t go away and I’d be incredibly surprised if Ilkay Gundogan wasn’t a Manchester City player next season. He’s available, experienced and fits the mould of a player that Pep Guardiola would like to sign. City fans, it might be time to get excited about this rumour now.
