Jorginho’s Premier League trip took some interesting twist along the way.
The 27-year-old was initially headed to Manchester but suddenly had a change of mind.
Chelsea is now in pole position to land the talented midfielder according to Napoli president Aurelio De Laurentiis.
Initial reports had claimed the Citizens didn’t match the Italian’s valuation for their top star.
Laurentiis has now hinted that Jorginho himself opted for the Blues as he prefers to settle in London rather than Manchester.
The businessman, however, disclosed that the Brazilian-born playmaker’s switch to Stamford Bridge isn’t dependent on Maurizio Sarri.
“Jorginho? Although we consider him to be a great player, for the sake of Ancelotti’s style of football and knowing that the interest from Chinese clubs in (Napoli midfielder Marek) Hamsik was relative, we decided to assess the bids, which originally came from City,” said De Laurentiis.
“I have to apologise to Khaldoon (Al Mubarak, the Manchester City chairman) because I closed a deal with him 15 days ago, but Jorginho would prefer to live in London than Manchester, I can understand that and especially if Chelsea pays him more.
“My agreement with (Chelsea owner Roman) Abramovich (on Jorginho) is irrespective of whether or not Sarri ends up taking charge of the Blues.”
Jorginho is rated at around £57m by the Naples-based side due to his remarkable rise in the last two years.
Last season, he garnered 97 passes per game – more than any other midfielder in all of Europe.
