With Jose Mourinho set to take charge at Manchester United this summer, we take a look at four players he wants to bring to the club in the transfer window.
1) John Stones
Whilst Raphael Varane may be his number one target, John Stones could be a more realistic signing. Mourinho is a big admirer of both players but most recently tried to sign Stones for Chelsea last season. Everton refused several offers, reportedly as high as £40million. Should a similar offer arrive this summer, though, Everton may be more willing to accept. This, in part, is due to the 21-year-old’s poor form and also due to the fact that Everton need to rebuild. £40million would help Roberto Martinez (or potentially a new manager) sign an established replacement and perhaps improve in other areas of the pitch – namely by signing a goalkeeper. Mourinho will be keen to sign a defensive partner for Chris Smalling as Manchester United have consistently had problems trying to keep Phil Jones and Marcos Rojo fit. Daley Blind has done a half decent job in a central role, but he is certainly not a title-winning centre-half. Stones has won more than 65% of his aerial duels this season.
