One man will take the headlines though, Mesut Ozil. The German took the matchball home, scoring his first Arsenal hat trick. He also (amazingly) picked up his 1st assist of the season on the night. He hadn’t really hit his best form this season but this second half hat trick will have done wonders for his confidence.

It was his first hat trick of his professional career, and it marked a change in style from the playmaker, who is beginning to become ruthless in front of goal, just as Arsene Wenger had challenged him to do.

Off character, Ozil only completed 74% of his passes on the night, and he struggled, looking laboured in the first half. Crucially he got an assist in the first half though and then in the second he exploded onto the scene – netting a 30-minute hat trick. Defensively he showed an industrious side to his game on the night, making three tackles.

With Ozil’s contract situation still up in the air, Arsenal fans reacted by suggesting that the Gunners should give Ozil what he wants.

Within reason of course, I would agree that Arsenal need to pay up to keep Ozil. With less than two years remaining on his contract, Wenger should make his and Alexis’ extensions a priority. Even when Ozil is not in his best form, he is capable of scoring three and assisting one – it says a lot about the quality of player he is. He’s also now finding some great goalscoring form. With the three tonight, he’s now scored 6 goals for Arsenal this season. Last season in all competitions he only managed 8. Aged 28, Mesut is in his peak, let’s ensure he plays his best football of his career at Arsenal.

He’s a player I’ve always really liked, I could not believe it when he signed for Arsenal. Despite his ‘magic’ he has always lacked a clinical edge in front of goal. He has lacked confidence in front of goal, and now with these 6 goals, and we are only in October, surely his confidence will reach new heights. Let’s hope there are many more goals to come from him.
