Liverpool fans have awoken with a sour taste in their mouth for the second-time this season after a European slip-up, with Besiktas knocking the Reds out of the Europa League in Istabul- the venue ten years ago for *that* Champions League final.
We were treated to a masterclass of penalties, until £20m defender Dejan Lovren stepped up and sent his spot-kick into orbit. Whilst he was criticised, the question is why on earth was he down to take the fifth penalty?
That debate has raged on from the final whistle and is likely to run for a couple of days, whilst I’m afraid we also don’t have the answer to the bizarre decision.
Feel sorry for Lovren though, no-one else will step up so it’s left to the scapegoat to take the final penalty.

Well Dejan Lovren’s career was hanging ever so delicately in the balance of that penalty and basically… it’s been nice knowing him

Lovren’s penalty just landed in my back garden.

9 great penalties. One terrible, terrible penalty! Lovren’s Anfield career in a 12 yard nutshell. — 138.com (@138dotcom) February 26, 2015
This has been the best penalty shootout I’ve seen in ages…except for Lovren.

Why is Dejan Lovren taking the 5th penalty?!? Rodgers madness? — Stewart Owadally (@sowadally) February 26, 2015
Lovren to score the winning penalty.
