Manchester United are keeping their eye on Alexandre Lacazette ahead of a potential summer move for the prolific striker, whilst three Premier League clubs have made bids – according to L’Equipe. The talented striker – who almost joined Newcastle last summer – is expected to leave Lyon this time around, with Manchester United, Arsenal, Spurs and West Ham believes to be amongst the interested clubs.
Manchester United are desperate for a talented striker, after the club had to promote Marcus Rashford to compensate for their lack of options in front of goal. Admittedly, Rashford has impressed for Manchester United, scoring seven goals in his first thirteen games. But Manchester United will be aware that they need an experienced striker to lead their line, with Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial United’s only current number nines, with Rooney taking up an advanced midfield role.
Newcastle had agreed a fee with Lyon to sign Alexandre Lacazette last summer but a move never materialised, with reports suggesting that the prolific striker turned down a move to the North-East in favour of waiting for a bigger club. Looking back at it, Lacazette probably made the right decision there. Lacazette came to the attention of Premier League clubs last season, when he scored thirty-one goals in forty appearances, leading to a number of clubs to scout the twenty-four-year-old. Arsenal, Real Madrid, Manchester United and Paris Saint-Germain all scouted the striker last season but it was Arsenal who were most heavily linked with a move for him. Arsenal are still believed to hold an interest in the talented Frenchman and could look to challenge United for his signature if he decides to leave Lyon this summer, which looks likely.
How does Alexandre Lacazette compare to Manchester United’s other strikers?
It’s tough to compare Manchester United’s strikers. Anthony Martial has spent most of the season playing on the wing, whereas Marcus Rashford only recently made his Manchester United debut. However, Alexandre Lacazette has scored an impressive nineteen goals in thirty-nine appearances, more than any Manchester United player this season. Lacazette has scored seventeen league goals for Lyon this season, which is just two less than Anthony Martial, Marcus Rashford and Wayne Rooney combined.
Lacazette has also created thirty-six chances this season, despite playing up front. For comparison, Anthony Martial and Wayne Rooney have created thirty-five chances each. However, Alexandre Lacazette has a low shooting accuracy, with just 55%, which suggests that the Frenchman is always eager to get a shot away on goal, even when passing could be a better option.
With the lack of talented strikers in the transfer window, Alexandre Lacazette could be a good option for Manchester United. The Frenchman is pacey, strong and prolific and has all the attributes to be a fantastic Premier League striker. However, United may be hoping to sign a truly elite striker, such as Thomas Muller or Romelu Lukaku, who are a level above Alexandre Lacazette. If United’s main targets are unobtainable, Lacazette could be a great fall back option.
