While Uruguay was sweating against France in the quarter-final of the World Cup in Russia, several Arsenal fans were hoping for their downfall.
Gunners’ faithful were hoping they exited the competition so as to finalize a deal for star midfielder Lucas Torreira.
They got their wish; the South Americans ultimately lost 2-0 to Les Bleus, drawing the 22-year-old further nearer to the Emirates.
Torreira was his country’s most influential man in the middle setting the tone for Edinson Cavani and Luis Suarez to attack.
Arsenal has reportedly had a bid of around £30m accepted by Sampdoria.
The Gunners were desperate to land their man during the World Cup that they organized a medical in Russia.
However, his dad, Rodrigo, opted against such as it would unsettle him during the competition.
“Arsenal offered to do the medical in Russia but we decided against it because we felt it was inconvenient, it was not the right time,” he told Fox Sports Argentina.
