Liverpool are set to offer Andros Townsend the opportunity to return straight to the Premier League next season as they prepare to trigger the wingers £10.5 million release clause.
According to reports Liverpool have joined a long list of Premier League sides contemplating whether to make a move for the Magpies winger.
The same report goes on to suggest Jurgen Klopp has prioritised a pacey winger to be brought this summer and has already expressed an interest in Southampton’s Saido Mane, Schalke’s Leroy Sane and Arsenal’s Theo Walcott.
Townsend seems to top the long list of targets with Southampton unwilling to part ways with Sane for less than £30 million and Schalke demanding around £40+ million for their prize asset.
Townsend fell out of favour at Tottenham under Mauricio Pochettino and was granted a move to Newcastle in January for £12 million. Townsend certainly re-established his career but was unable to help Newcastle fight the relegation battle although he was one of their stand-out performers. The Magpies are now set to play Championship football next season for the first time since 2009-2010.
Townsend has not discussed his Newcastle future following their relegation but will do at some point this summer, the Magpies are desperate to keep hold of the winger and are likely to increase his £55,000 a week wages in order to keep him at St James Park.
Newcastle know it will be hard to keep hold of their key players this summer with many players wanting to play in the top division. Rafa Benitez will remain as the Toons manager after signing a new contract despite relegation, but the former Real Madrid manager will not be able to keep hold of his main players if clubs come calling from the Premier League or abroad.
A fee of just £10.5 million for an England international is to good of a deal to turn down for the Reds, at just 24 years-old he also has room for improvement with the player already well worth his release clause.
Liverpool will look to push for the top four next season with the league competition being bigger than ever, Townsend is firmly in their sights, the Newcastle man made just 12 league appearances for Newcastle scoring four goals. The pacey winger will certainly add much-needed skill and flair on the flanks. The versatile winger is predominantly used on the right wing but can play with as much ease on the left which will please the Reds boss Klopp, a real strength of Townsend is his long shots with the winger having a very good eye for goal outside the box, the pacey winger is very good with the ball and has great dribbling abilities and has good delivery, which of course could be worked on, although there is not a real weakness in Townsend’s play, but something he does lack is aerial duels and can be seen quite light weight in this area.
Townsend was a bright spark in Newcastle’s relegation and nearly got himself on the plane to France for the Euros after being announced in the provisional 26 man squad. Unfortunately he didn’t make the final cut and was sent home along with Fabian Delph and Danny Drinkwater.
Townsend’s reported £10.5m buy-out clause has caught the eyes of Manchester City, Crystal Palace, Southampton and West Ham United who have all been linked with the winger in recent weeks.
