Didier Deschamps announced the France squad this week and amongst those to miss out was Manchester United’s Morgan Schneiderlin. The midfielder has endured a tepid debut season at Old Trafford, somewhat contrasting to the Manchester United star picked by Deschamps, Anthony Martial.

The young striker arrived with a hefty price-tag and although he hasn’t set the world alight yet, he is still very young and is starting to show a lot of promise. Plucked from Ligue 1, Martial arrived very raw, but with the attributes to succeed in the Premier League: pace, strength and desire in abundance. In recent weeks he has become more clinical in front of goal and from the left wing, is starting to show his versatility.

It is this versatility that could see him do so well for France this summer. With competition from Olivier Giroud and Antoinne Griezmann for a central role in attack, Martial may be utilised as a wide player and if Deschamps shows early faith in him, then you can expect Martial to deliver. He will be on home soil, confident on the back of a good season, and playing with no fear. Martial is only 20 years old, and this youth could be advantageous as players like Martial often play with no fear on the big stage, something Deschamps must consider when selecting his starting eleven.

A good tournament from Martial could see him take his game to the next level and come back to Manchester United as a world class talent – he certainly has the raw ability to do that.

What will be hard for United, possibly out of the Champions League next season, is to keep hold of the striker, who is reportedly a target for Paris Saint-Germain this summer. PSG are looking to replace Zlatan Ibrahimovic. A good summer for France would make keeping hold of the youngster all the tougher, despite his arrival only being recent.
