In De Gea, Manchester United have managed to keep hold of a goalkeeper that in my opinion, is the best in the league. Meanwhile Pep looks to have decided to stick with Joe Hart and he continues to be inconsistent, I don’t think he should playing for a club trying to win the league. Not only do United have a better goalkeeper but their defence also appears stronger at this stage. City really struggled at the back last season and so far, Pep has done very little to try and change that. A case could be made that four of Manchester City’s back five needed to be upgraded, but so far Pep has made no additions in that area. Even if John Stones is signed, I don’t think he is at the top level yet. Manchester United have Chris Smalling and Eric Bailly and they are also searching for another experienced defender if the press are to be believed. I’m interested to see the back four that Pep selects, but for this season at least, I think it will be a bit experimental and not work out too well.
