Among the excitement of what Eric Dier and Dele Alli could bring to the England team in France this summer, the importance of Mousa Dembélé to this Tottenham squad was somewhat lost in knowledge. Spurs’ Argentine boss knew it all along, however, as the 29-year-old replaced Ryan Mason in the starting XI. With just one defeat in his 28 starts, the Lilywhites will be sweating over his four-game suspension that’s to carry on from last season, especially considering that in his absence, Spurs went on to lose two more games before the season drew to a close.

With the Belgian out, it’s plausible to believe Pochettino may turn to a midfield two of Dier and new signing Victor Wanyama, who should offer the Sporting academy graduate a fresh challenge ahead of the new season to the one posed by Nabil Bentaleb.

Alli, of course, drives the midfield forward in unison with striker Harry Kane. Ten goals and 11 assists in 33 league appearances sees the 20-year-old rub shoulders with the likes of Riyad Mahrez and Dimitri Payet in his debut season, so there’ll be a great deal of attention afforded to his progression in the coming campaign.
