According to reports Raphaël Guerreiro is moving a step closer to joining German giants Borussia Dortmund after reaching a contract agreement between the player and Dortmund with a four-year deal being ironed out.
Negotiations have been ongoing for several weeks between Dortmund and Guerreiro after they identified him as an ideal left back to give solid competition to Marcel Schmelzer.
The 22-year-old Portuguese international that has been capped five times has scored 10 goals in 95 games since joining Lorient from Caen in 2013.
We recently covered Guerreiro to Arsenal as they look for an ideal replacement for Kieran Gibbs who is likely to depart this summer but it looks like Dortmund have won the race to sign their man. However Arsenal now look more likely to sign Ricardo Rodriguez.
We take a look at how Guerreiro compares with Dortmund’s current left-back Schmelzer. Guerreiro is a versatile full back / winger and has been used on the wing many times for current club Lorient. Schmelzer has also played on the wing when Dortmund use a system with three at the back. Schmelzer comes out on top for tackles won after winning 1.40 per 90 minutes compared to Guerreiro who managed 1.29. A clear strength for Schmelzer is his aerial presence managing to win 1.92 aerial duels. A worry for Dortmund will be Guerreiro’s aerial power, he only managed to win 0.32 which is below average. Guerreiro has proven his ability to drive forward scoring 0.11 goals per 90. This is far more superior to Schmelzer who scored 0 goals for Dortmund. The German club will certainly be looking to shore up their defence this summer with the hopeful signing of Guerreiro, they will be very impressed with the stat that shows Guerreiro scoring 10.56 on total defence score which puts him ahead of current Dortmund player Schmelzer who managed just 5.30 [score via Squawka].
The full-back who can also play as a winger has 12 months left on his current contract at Lorient and it seems Dortmund have managed to get their man for a cut-price deal of around €12m excluding bonuses for Guerreiro.
Liverpool were also interested in Guerreiro to provide healthy competition to Alberto Moreno and eventually replace the defender who has looked vulnerable in recent months. They will now focus their attention on Jordan Amavi according to reports.
More noticeably, Guerreiro looks set to turn down an offer from Barcelona after the club made an offer worth €10m excluding bonuses. Guerreiro is said to not be interested in joining the Catalan side as it was to play second fiddle to first team Left Back Jordi Alba and has instead opted to sign for Dortmund.
