Diego Costa v Per Mertesacker

Shkodran Mustafi might be able to start, but Laurent Koscielny’s final day idiocy means he is suspended. Should Mustafi miss out, the veteran Per Mertesacker will start.

Mertesacker has played just 37 minutes this season, which were against Everton last weekend. The German has been a good servant to Arsenal and is one of Europe’s under-rated centre-backs over recent years, but few will fancy his chances against the fire-breathing Diego Costa. Costa is set to move to China this summer and, after a dip in mid-season form, has picked up his standards in the final weeks of the campaign.

While Eden Hazard and Pedro naturally require attention, Costa’s role as the focal point of the Blues’ attack is as key as any. Should Mertesacker start, Chelsea will feel the Spaniard can pull him out of position to create spaces for his flanking Belgian and Spaniard to expose.
