Chelsea vs. Manchester United: 3 Key Battles That Will Decide Who Wins

2 – Marcos Alonso vs. Marcus Rashford

A new feature of late at Stamford Bridge has been the change of formation made by Antonio Conte, welcomed with the success of two consecutive wins against Hull City and Leicester City in the Premier League.

The arrival of Fiorentina’s left-wing back, Marcos Alonso, has facilitated that particular tactical transition, but the likes of Marcus Rashford may well have enough in their locker to expose a doubt or two about the managerial tweak.

This battle is all very dependent on Chelsea maintaining the 3-4-3 setup of course, on top of Rashford falling on Alonso’s flank, but the theory stands against any full back the young Englishman goes up against, rather than any flaw in the Spaniard’s game itself.

A lot has been made of the freedom given to Eden Hazard, playing a lot closer to Diego Costa than usual, which leaves the defensive support for full backs like Alonso wanting.

Rashford should cause a lot more damage one-on-one than the wingers before him in Chelsea’s previous two fixtures, so there’s joy to be had if he’s on top form, potentially.
