Manchester United lost only their second game in 20, as Gary Monk’s Swansea City over came Louis Van Gaal’s men on Saturday afternoon at the Liberty Stadium. This win was a milestone for the Swans, as it was their first Premier League double over United in the club’s history.
United surrendered the lead having gone ahead early in the first half through a deflected Ander Herrera strike. The game was leveled when South Korean international Ki, popped up as he usually does in this fixture, just minutes later from close range. In a game where the reds had more of the ball, it took a moment of bad fortune to decide the game from a Man United perspective. Jonjo Shelvey’s long range shot took a touch off an unknowing Bafatimbi Gomis to wrong foot the keeper to earn Swansea the 3 points and their historic moment.
The loss comes just days after Van Gaal claimed the United players were finally understanding his ‘philosophy’ and should be moving back towards what we’d seen of them in more successful times. United’s recent performances have been under criticism in recent weeks and the former Champions have been labelled as somewhat of a ‘Long ball team’, which is fairly accurate to some extent. I’m sure in Van Gaal’s defence, the recent run of results are proving more important than performance levels as he feels the players are still adapting to his style. It may make you wonder, with further investment and a little time, will we see United return to the good old days under LVG?
