Having gone into the international break off the back of a disappointing 1-1 draw with Stoke at Old Trafford, Manchester United will be keen to return to league action with three points. However, they face an uphill task to do this as they face an in-form Liverpool side who have a 100% record from two games at Anfield this season.
In terms of team news, Phil Jones is the only absentee for Jose Mourinho’s side for the Monday night clash, whereas Luke Shaw and Henrikh Mkhitaryan are back in contention to start. Here is our Manchester United predicted line-up to face Liverpool.
Goalkeeper: David De Gea
The Spanish stopper has been very good for United this season, making some very important stops so far. He will have to be at his very best on Monday night to keep a clean sheet against a clinical and vibrant Liverpool attack.
Defence: Antonio Valencia, Eric Bailly, Chris Smalling, Daley Blind
The Manchester United defensive unit will have its hands full all evening. Antonio Valencia will have to keep Coutinho quiet if he resumes his position on the left, and Daley Blind will have an equally as difficult job, having to deal with either Roberto Firmino or Sadio Mane, whoever starts on Monday night.
If Sadio Mane does play down the middle, then his pace looking to get in-behind will terrorise either Chris Smalling or Eric Bailly at the back. The pair’s positioning will have to be perfect if they are to keep the Liverpool attack quiet, and the centre-back duo will for sure look to put in some early strong tackles and set the tone from the start.
Defensive Midfield: Paul Pogba, Ander Herrera
The role of the defensive shield will be key to United if they are to come away from Anfield with a result. Ander Herrera will most likely sit deeper again, whereas Paul Pogba will look to push forward when given the opportunity. However, the Frenchman will need to be very disciplined against Liverpool, but Pogba’s strength on the ball will be key for United to quickly turn defence into attack.
Attacking Midfield: Marcus Rashford, Juan Mata, Anthony Martial
If Manchester United are to come away from Merseyside with anything at all, they will need to attack with pace and make the most of their opportunities, and I feel that the trio of Rashford, Mata and Martial are the right men to do this. Martial and Rashford will provide the pace and the runs down the wings, whereas Mata in the middle will pick out the crucial passes.
Striker: Zlatan Ibrahimovic
I said that United would have to attack with pace, and the former Swedish international is far from the paciest player in the Premier League, but he will be a great target man. He can hold the ball up whilst others join the attack, and he can try and get on the end of any crosses delivered by the likes of Martial and Rashford on the wings.
Who will prevail from the battle at Anfield, Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool or Jose Mourinho’s Manchester United?
