Mikel Arteta signed a contract extension for Arsenal on Wednesday, and most of the Arsenal fans reacted negatively to the news.
The 32 year old midfielders contract was due to expire at the end of this season and after he picked up an injury at the start of January, many tipped him to not get a new deal at the Emirates. However Arsene Wenger has maintained his faith in the Spaniard by giving him a new deal that will see him stay at the club until 2016, when he will be 34.
He has been a consistent performer at the base of Arsenal’s midfield, but some fans prefer the aggressive tactics of someone like Francis Coquelin. With the Arsenal fans hoping for a new defensive midfielder to arrive, they will perhaps be disappointed by the new of Arteta’s extension.
Some Arsenal fans were happy to see the experienced midfielder sign on for another year, whilst others were quite strongly against the decision from the club. Here’s how some of the fans are reacting on Twitter to the news:
Why on earth have Arsenal gave Arteta a 1 year contract extension hes a raspberry ripple #ArsenaI

Not sure why some people are so outraged that arteta signed a new deal.

Maybe Arsenal should of spent more time focusing on buying a new CDM rather than offering Arteta a new deal

besides, I'm 90% sure Arteta will stay at Arsenal for coaching later. He's perhaps working on it now too. Great person to have around.

Arteta has signed a new one year contract. Goodbye Flamini! 🙂

Why not just give Arteta a player/coach role, with a massive emphasis on the coach bit. He was too slow 3 years ago ffs.

Why would someone give an Injury prone ageing Arteta a new 1 year deal ?

For instance if we get a top DM in the summer and he gets injured, I'd pick Coquelin over Arteta anyday, for any game. So why keep him?

Arteta new contract? If he can remain fit I don't see why not. Plus he's a good pro, would like to see his role reduced but keep him
