3) Sergio Ramos
The Manchester United defence has been more leaky than perhaps Jose Mourinho would have wanted this season, and is certainly an area that Jose Mourinho will want to strengthen over the next couple of transfer windows, and he could start to do so as early as January.
The Express report that Jose Mourinho could be willing to fork out as much as £42m in order to bring the Spaniard to Old Trafford. Although a summer move might be the more likely if any move at all, but we mustn’t rule out Mourinho making a January move.
Looking at two Manchester United central defenders, Eric Bailly and Chris Smalling, how do they compare to Sergio Ramos? In terms of interceptions, Bailly by a mile has made the most, averaging 3.57 per game, with Ramos and Smalling averaging nearer to one per game.
Bailly and Ramos both on average win two tackles per game, Smalling winning just 0.65. However, Smalling hasn’t in fact lost a tackle this season, with Bailly and Ramos losing around 1.4 per game. Also, Smalling has won 75% of his duels this season, compared to 60.78% that Ramos has won, and the 51.92% that Bailly has won.
Looking at those statistics, the three look similar on the whole, but of course have different strengths. Having said that, Ramos is the captain at Real Madrid and brings with him an invaluable wealth of experience, and has the qualities to command the back line at Manchester United.
Is Sergio Ramos worth spending £42m on?
