Southampton were 2-0 losers at home to Chelsea on Sunday afternoon. We take a look at who impressed for the under par Saints, and who let them down.
Fraser Forster 5: admittedly, Forster made two fine saves in the game, but he also parried plenty back into the box. Not the best showing from the big man.
Cuco Martina 5: Martina was at fault for the second goal after comically attempting to block the strike - he also failed to influence the game in the opposition’s half.
Jose Fonte 6: Fonte put in a number of strong tackles, but being the captain of a defence that’ conceded two goals, he has to receive a six.
Virgil Van Dijk 6: Van Dijk had a very similar game to Fonte. His ability was clear for all to see, but Chelsea were so prolific in front of goal.
Ryan Bertrand 6: considering that this is Bertrand’s first game back from injury, he was looking sharp and had the right idea on numerous occasions, but failed to make the final ball count.
Oriol Romeu 6: despite arguably being at fault for the first goal, Romeu soon grabbed a grip of the game and won plenty of midfield battles. However, Hazard often left him split in two minds, hence why Romeu only receives a six.
Jordy Clasie 4: Clasie was poor today and failed to influence the game at either end of the pitch.
Steven Davis 5: Davis failed to initiate enough counter attacks or be expressive enough in today’s game
Dusan Tadic 7: Tadic was one of the few Southampton players who asked questions of the Chelsea defence
Charlie Austin 5: In fairness to Austin he received little service, but when his one chance arrived, he failed to take it.
Nathan Redmond 6: Redmond gave his all today and put together a number of nice dribbles and passing moves.
Sofiane Boufal 6: It’s clear to see that Boufal looks to make the difference whenever he gets the ball. Some tricks worked out, others didn’t, but ultimately, the Chelsea defence was just too organised.
