Manchester United have been boosted in their pursuit of trying to sign a Chelsea midfielder, with the player desperate to make the move, according to reports.
The Sun say that Matic has told new boss Antonio Conte that he wants to reunite with Jose Mourinho at Manchester United.
Jose Mourinho appears to be very keen to bring Matic to the club and the player seems to be unsettled at Chelsea. With no European football at all at Chelsea next season, United may appear to be a slightly more attractive destination due to their qualification for the Europa League.
Despite falling out of favour under Mourinho last season, the player is thought to have a close working relationship with the new Manchester United manager and that would explain his desire for a reunion with Jose. Should he arrive, Matic will not need time to settle in a league where he already has a winners medal and under a manager he knows so well.
Should Matic arrive it is likely that at least one of Ander Herrera, Bastian Schweinsteiger or Morgan Schneiderlin will leave after Michael Carrick signed 1-year a contract extension. Schweinsteiger, with his injury problems may seem the most likely to leave, though his wages may make him hard to shift.
If Chelsea do approve a sale it is likely they will ask for around £30million. Although they won’t want to lose the player, they are likely to accept such a large bid for a player who doesn’t want to be at the club, if those reports are in fact true. The 27-yea-old has only managed 28 caps for Serbia but for his club he has been an influential figure since moving back to London.
Chelsea are being heavily linked with a move for Radja Nainggolan and he may be seen as a replacement for Matic. Antonio Conte could view the Belgian as a more energetic option to have in midfield although he is not a natural holding midfielder like Matic, so if Conte were to make a direct swap he would need to make a formation change in order to get the right balance.
Whilst Cesc Fabregas is in the team it is probably best for a more defensive midfielder to be in the side, so if Matic were to be sold, Conte would probably want to sign Nainggolan and a more ready made replacement for Matic as Jon Obi Mikel also looks set to leave.
Manchester United are reportedly eyeing Afriyie Acquah as an alternative to Matic, should Chelsea be insistent and manage to keep hold of the Serbian. Acquah is a younger (24) but less proven midfield option. The Ghanaian midfielder has similar attributes to Matic and would be a cheaper alternative too with Torino likely to accept bids in excess of £10million.
