The season has finally come to an end for Arsenal and it probably couldn’t come any sooner after a somewhat disappointing campaign. The Gunners once again have the bragging rights in North London but serious reinforcements are needed this summer. The spine needs improving, the only place that is very stable is in goal with Petr Cech. Arsene Wenger admitted after the Aston Villa game he is looking to sign three players this summer and we take a look at who is likely to come in.
1 – Granit Xhaka
Granit Xhaka is likely to join Arsenal this summer. Arsenal have reportedly bid £33.8 million for the Mönchengladbach midfielder. According to the Evening Standard the Gunners are increasingly confident a deal can be completed in the coming weeks. Mikel Arteta, Tomas Rosicky and Mathieu Flamini have all now left the Gunners and a midfielder will need to be brought in to fill the gap which will be left. Xhaka, who will be brought in to play in a deep-lying role for the Gunners can also be versatile, playing in the advanced playmaker role or even as a box-to-box midfielder. He will give the Gunners a missing presence in the middle of the park where Arsenal have really lacked leadership and a real dominating ball playing defensive minded midfielder. Standing over 6ft, and just aged 23 he could really prove to be the missing piece in Arsenal’s spine, he has already shown maturity to captain his current side and at his tender age already managed an impressive 39 caps for Switzerland.
Arsenal have been criticized for being too weak in central midfield, and one thing the Gunners certainly lack is aerial presence. Xhaka has won 3.53 of aerial duels whilst Coquelin has won just 1.03 and Ramsey 0.89. Coquelin comes out on top with tackles won after scoring an impressive 3.10. Xhaka is second on 2.14 and Ramsey last 2.02. Xhaka once again comes out on top over the Arsenal duo after completing 72.59 successful passes. with Ramsey (62.07) and Coquelin (53.32) behind. Coquelin comes out on top with 56.28% for total duels, Xhaka is behind on 49.21% and Ramsey last 44.42%.
A deal, if completed looks likely to be announced in the coming weeks after Xhaka admitted he wants his future resolved before the Euros. He would certainly give Arsenal solidarity in the middle of the park and would provide an upgrade on the trio leaving the Gunners.
