Jose Mourinho said he only wanted to make three major signings and after the big money move for Paul Pogba, you would be forgiven for thinking Manchester United’s business this summer was over, but that appears to be the case.
According to reports in Spain, Manchester United are now after Real Madrid defender Raphael Varane. The reports suggest that Varane would cost around €40million.
The negative though is that the report in AS suggests that although Varane is a big fan of Mourinho, the player currently has no desire to leave Spain.
That won’t put off Mourinho though, the Portuguese manager has managed to lure the likes of Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Paul Pogba to the club this summer, despite the clubs lack of Champions League football next season.
Through a mixture of money and manager pulling power, Mourinho is making United a great team again. Is Varane the next piece in the jigsaw? He’d certainly be a brilliant signing.
Despite the signing of Eric Bailly, Manchester United would surely benefit from another defensive signing. Phil Jones and Daley Blind are not the best fit for Mourinho style defences, Chris Smalling is good and so is Bailly, but he’s young. Traditionally Mourinho likes to have a defensive partnership with experience and although Varane is not the age of an experienced defender, he has experience beyond his years, having played at the highest level for club and country for many years now.
