The transfer window has opened, and yet again, Manchester United fans are wondering whether David De Gea will still be at their club when the season starts again.
Reports have suggested that De Gea has told Mourinho he wants to play for Real Madrid at some point in his career. If that is the case, then why don’t United move on from De Gea? The uncertainty about his long term future can do no good and surely it is best for United to try and find a keeper that is happy at the club and wants to be there long-term.
The Telegraph suggest that United have braced themselves for a bid from Madrid this summer, with the club valuing their keeper at £60million. With just two years left on his current contract, it looks as if De Gea will not extend his contract and if he doesn’t, then United need to sell as soon as possible in order to maximise the amount they will receive for him.
It’s anyone’s guess as to whether or not De Gea will make the move this summer, the likes of Ander Herrera and Sergio Romero are desperate for him to stay in Manchester but what is your prediction? My gut tells me that De Gea will still be United’s keeper when the season starts, but I’m not sure that is the best thing for the club and their fans, to continue to delay what seems likely to be the inevitable.
There are some top quality keepers in Europe at the moment that United could start to pursue. Gianluigi Donnarumma now looks unattainable for a while due to recently signing a new contract, but Jan Oblak of Atletico Madrid may be a realistic target. Inter Milan’s Samir Handanovic is also a name that is regularly linked with the club.
Neither of the aforementioned names would come cheap but they’d almost certainly be attainable for less than the £50million-£60million that United would likely receive for De Gea – so replacing De Gea is unlikely to have any effect on United’s transfer budget this summer.
Mourinho won’t be keen to sell but with the Portuguese manager hoping to be at United for the long term, surely he too will have concerns over the current cloud hovering over De Gea.
