Arsenal face a battle to keep-hold of their key-players this summer but one member of their squad believes they’ll be successful in their attempts to keep Alexis Sanchez- at least for the short-term.
The Chilean superstar has attracted the attention of Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City and Arsenal face a battle to retain the services of the two-time Copa America winner, as his contract has entered it’s final 12 months and there’s no sign of an extension.
Arsenal, naturally, are desperate for their Player of the Year to remain at the Emirates Stadium the long-term and could even be prepared to miss out on funds this summer by ensuring Alexis stays at the club for the remainder of his contract- potentially meaning they’ll lose him on a free-transfer next year.
However, despite the potential financial loss, Arsenal captain Per Mertesacker believes Alexis Sanchez will ‘definitely stay’ and has stated the Gunners cannot sanction a sale.
What was said?
Quoted by Goal, Mertesacker responded to a question from Fox Sports as to whether Alexis will remain at the club and stated:
“Yes, definitely. We have a strong squad and we do not want to lose any players. Even in their final contract year we need them. We cannot afford to lose them. If you’re talking about championships, to keep our best player is key.”
“I think he was impressive in the Confederations Cup. He’s now on holiday, so it’s quiet in terms of conversations. But he’s a warrior on the pitch. I think he wants to come back as quickly as possible – he hates holidays, he hates to calm down.”
“I’m looking forward to playing alongside him in my last season and he thinks the same.”
